| I will be referring to Windows Live Messenger as MSN as well in this guide as this software used to be referred to as MSN Messenger also Windows Live Messenger is an instant messenger that allows you to communicate with contacts which you add via their email address. Along with just communicating using text with your added contacts there are many other features that are available to you whilst using this software. Users can "appear offline" to whomever they wish, for example if you wanted to only speak to person A and not person B, you can select to appear offline to person B and they would not know that you had come online. Offline messaging is also applied whereby if someone is offline and you send them a message, they will receive this message when they come back online. Gallery viewing, you can share files and photos with your contacts There are many games and applications contacts can use together Those are just a few features of this well known software. GUIDE TO USING MSN Here are some quick guides that may be useful. (Click on the bold text to drop down the guide) The main 5 Menu's in this software are: File, Contacts, Actions, Tools, Help. These main menu's will provide options for using MSN. - SIGNING IN:
1. Open up the Windows Live Messenger program 2. Enter your email address 3. Enter your password 4. Select your preferences of signing in (e.g. what status you want to sign in as) 5. Hit enter or click "Sign in"
- ADDING A CONTACT:
1. Click contacts 2. Add a contact... 3. Enter your contacts email address (enter a mobile phone number if you wish) 4. Click next 5. Choose whether to make this person a "favourite"* 6. Click next 7. You have now sent an invite to the email address you entered. The other person will get an invite requesting you add them, if they accept you will see them in your contacts shortly. *Favourite: This means that the person you are adding will always be at the top of your list of contacts.
- CHATTING TO A CONTACT:
1. Find the contact you wish to talk to 2. Double click their contact name 3. In the message window, enter text and press enter to send the message
- DELETING A CONTACT:
1. Right click on the users screen name 2. Select delete contact 3. Confirm that you wish to delete the contact

1. Click contacts 2. Delete a contact 3. Click the contact you wish to delete 4. Click OK 5. Confirm that you wish to delete the contact
- SIGNING OUT:
1. Click file 2. Click sign out
- CHANGING STATUS:
A status is how other contact will view you, it can be either: Online, Busy, Away, Appear Offline. To change your status: 1. Click File 2. Click or Hover over Status 3. Select the appropriate status
- CHANGING YOUR DISPLAY PICTURE:
A display picture is a picture that you wish to represent your profile, other contacts will see this picture. 1. Click on Square image in the top left of the MSN window 2. Select an image or click browse 3. Find the image you wish to use, double click it 4. Make sure the image is selected 5. Click OK

1. Click tools 2. Click Change your picture.. 3. Select an image or click browse 4. Find the image you wish to use, double click it 5. Make sure the image is selected 6. Click OK
- SETTING UP WEBCAM AND AUDIO INPUT:
1. Click tools 2. Click set up audio and video devices... 3. Select the speaker/microphone you wish to use using the drop down menu (default is recommended) 4. You can test your speakers to see if a sound is played when tested 5. Select the microphone, make some noise to check the microphone volume bar moves into green or yellow 6. Click Next 7. Select the visual input using the drop down bar until you see yourself 8. Select Finish and you are ready to go!
- STARTING A VIDEO CALL:
1. Open up a message window by double clicking a contact in your contact list 2. Click video call 3. Wait for contact to accept
